Caught in a Crossfire
We’re big fans of Jon Stewart and the Daily Show, Comedy Central’s award-winning news program. Yes, the Daily Show won the Television Critics Association award for news and information programming!
Sorry we missed it, but Stewart appeared live on CNN’s Crossfire and was more than somewhat critical of mainstream news shows. The title of the review on MTV’s election news site is “Jon Stewart Bitchslaps CNN’s ‘Crossfire’ Show,” and for once the headline appears to be pretty accurate. If you like, you can read the MTV article for yourself.
We haven’t figured out how to embed html links in these articles, so you’ll have to cut and paste the following URL if you want to read the MTV article.
You can also read CNN’s own transcript of the show.
Crossfire’s Tucker Carlson suggested that Stewart “went easy” on John Kerry, and that set Jon right off.
Stewart has made many wry and self-deprecating comments about the Daily Show’s stature as a “fake news” organization, but a quick poll of SG contributors indicates that it is often easier to extract or infer actual news from the Daily than it is to get the real story from the mainstream outlets. Parody exaggerates truth, or something. It’s just a pity that the half-hour format doesn’t offer enough time to deal with more than a couple “headlines.”
In any case, SG awards “The Golden Fist of Truth” to Jon Stewart and thanks him for his courage.
