On the Origin of Theories

June 16th, 2005

A continuing theme of Christian fundamentalists is that Darwin’s theory of evolution is only a theory and so it should not be taught as fact in schools, or at the very least other “theories” should be presented at the same time. Fundamentalists are by their nature narrow-minded and ignorant, but they seem to have a disproportionate level of influence if not actual political power. Read the rest of this entry »

Housekeeping

June 12th, 2005

Our last article generated enough discussion that we felt we could sit back, relax, and get a bit of housekeeping done. We’ve moved the February articles to the new version of Sten Gazette and added a couple of new features just for fun. Read the rest of this entry »

Witch Hunt Escalation

June 4th, 2005

Today’s edition of the Rocky Mountain News is a dramatic escalation in the Ward Churchill Witch Hunt. The News devotes more space to this one cause than the Washington Post ever did with the Watergate scandal. It’s possible that the revelation of “Deep Throat’s” identity made some reporters and editors at the News want to be big-time Investigative Journalists, but they picked the wrong issue and ultimately, in our opinion, seriously embarrassed themselves. Snippets

May 29th, 2005

Today’s Denver Post newspaper contained an extraordinary rendition of the news. Scattered through Section A were these stories, all of which are somewhat bemusing when read in isolation, but make a bizarre picture when read in one sitting. Read the rest of this entry »

An Ecological Mystery in Yellowstone National Park
By Richard J. Schneider

Well, here’s an interesting story about our environment and ecosystems. Aspen trees, for example, were virtually disappearing from the park. After some study, scientists realized that all that remained of aspen trees in parts of Yellowstone were old and dying trees. Classy Class Action

May 22nd, 2005

In January we proposed some Simple Solutions to the perennially vexing question of Tort Reform. Following publication of that article there have been two interesting developments. The president has signed a half-assed federal tort reform bill into law, and Sten Gazette itself has become a participant in a class-action lawsuit. Read the rest of this entry »

Web Beacons

May 22nd, 2005

In the Surveillance Society, Big Brother has a compulsion to monitor everything we do. The Constitution does not even contain the word “privacy,” but privacy rights have been inferred from portions of the First, Fourth, and Fifth amendments and embodied in law at all levels of government. The problem: in almost everything you do, at home or in public, you have voluntarily surrendered your right to privacy. We don’t have a choice. The most intimate details of our lives are an open book to any person or organization who knows how to turn the pages. Read the rest of this entry »
